Bio
Born at the Royal Melbourne Zoo where his father worked as a keeper, Doug Gillespie was recruited to Princes Park after legendary coach Jack Worrall reportedly spotted the athletic teenager hurdling a picket fence to retrieve a wayward football. He immediately secured the full-back position, becoming a defensive anchor for the Blues during their first golden era. Gillespie played a crucial role in the back-to-back premiership triumphs of 1906 and 1907, though injury forced him to miss the 1908 Grand Final and the chance to secure a personal hat-trick of flags. Often playing alongside his twin brother Dave, he was renowned for his reliability and dash in the backline, retiring as a distinguished dual premiership player before serving his country in the First World War.
