Bio
Recruited from Braybrook, Doug Hawkins became the quintessential hero of Melbourne's western suburbs, evolving into one of the most skilled wingmen the game has seen. While he lacked the blistering pace typically associated with the position, Hawkins relied on an elite football brain and superb disposal efficiency to control the play. He was famous for his ability to create space in congestion and his refusal to use his non-dominant foot, a trait that became part of his folklore but rarely hindered his effectiveness due to his masterful evasion and baulking ability.
For nearly two decades, Hawkins was the face of the Footscray Football Club, captaining the side and eventually breaking Ted Whitten's long-standing club games record in 1994. Despite his legendary status, his exit from the Bulldogs was acrimonious. Viewed as surplus to requirements by the coaching staff at the end of the 1994 season, he was effectively pushed out of the club he had served for 17 years. Determined to continue playing, Hawkins transferred to Fitzroy for a final season, a move that allowed him to reach the 350-game milestone.
