Bio
Recruited from the Preston Swimmers, Doug Hellings established himself as a sturdy key defender for Fitzroy during the club's difficult campaigns of the mid-1960s. Standing 185cm, a solid height for a key position player of the era, he primarily manned the full-back post where he was tasked with spoiling opposition spearheads. While typically anchored in the backline, Hellings displayed unexpected versatility during the 1968 season when he was swung forward to boot 11 goals in just 12 games. He wore the number 2 guernsey for the majority of his tenure, serving as a reliable competitive fixture for the Lions until his final VFL appearance in 1969.
