Bio
Born at the Cummeragunja Mission, Doug Nicholls overcame significant racial prejudice to become a pioneering figure in Australian football. After initially being rejected by Carlton—where he was notoriously denied access to the training rooms—he established himself as a star in the VFA with Northcote, playing in a premiership side before Fitzroy finally recruited him in 1932. Standing just 157cm, he was an explosive winger whose blistering speed and agility allowed him to evade opponents and drive the Lions into attack with precision. While his VFL career was relatively short, his standing in the game is immense; he represented Victoria four times and is rightfully immortalised as the namesake of the AFL's annual Indigenous Round.
