A diminutive rover originally from Tasmania, Doug Ringrose arrived at Fitzroy as a mature-age recruit after building a strong reputation in the VFA with Brighton. Standing just 163cm, he was a crafty small forward and follower who made an immediate impact, averaging nearly a goal a game in his debut season despite his lack of VFL experience. His leadership qualities were recognised remarkably quickly, and he was appointed playing coach in just his second year at the club. However, the 1929 season proved difficult for the Maroons, and after a tough campaign that yielded only two wins, Ringrose departed the league to continue his career as a captain-coach in country Victoria.
