Teams

Recruited from Tallangatta in country Victoria, Doug Smith was a towering key-position prospect who experienced a rapid rise during his debut 1978 season. Standing at 193cm, he was thrust into North Melbourne’s senior lineup and remarkably found himself selected for the Grand Final against Hawthorn in just his seventh league game. Smith stood up under the immense pressure of the premiership decider, booting two goals in a losing cause—an impressive feat for a 20-year-old rookie surrounded by seasoned stars. While primarily used as a forward or ruck relief, he played his most consistent football between 1980 and 1982, where his height provided a valuable structural option for the Kangaroos. Although he never fully established himself as a permanent fixture in the senior 22, Smith remains best remembered for his contributions during one of the club's most successful eras.
