Recruited from nearby Winchelsea, Doug Stephenson was a diminutive rover and forward pocket who joined the Geelong list in 1970. Standing just 175cm, he faced the unenviable task of trying to break into an on-ball division led by club legend Bill Goggin, which severely restricted his access to the senior side. Despite finding first-team opportunities limited to just a handful of matches each year, Stephenson proved effective when drifting forward, managing to boot seven goals across his ten career games—including three goals in his four appearances in 1972. Ultimately serving as a depth player during a transition period for the Cats, he was unable to cement a permanent spot in the starting lineup and departed Kardinia Park at the conclusion of the 1972 season.
