Recruited from Ararat in western Victoria, Doug Tassell was a promising half-back flanker who seemed destined for a long career before tragedy struck. He broke into the Essendon lineup in 1969 and quickly established himself as a solid, dependable defender who split his time between the city and his family home in the country. After playing the first 11 games of the 1970 season, Tassell was ruled out of the Round 12 clash due to injury and decided to drive home to Ararat; during this trip, he was killed in a car accident at just 24 years of age. His sudden death deeply shook the club and the wider football community, who rallied to raise funds for his wife and young son, leaving him remembered as a talented footballer whose life was cut heartbreakingly short.
