Family

Recruited from Horsham, Doug Wade established himself as the defining full-forward of his generation during a dominant tenure at Geelong. Possessing a powerful frame, strong hands, and a booming, accurate kick, he was the focal point of the Cats' attack throughout the 1960s and played a pivotal role in the club's 1963 premiership victory. After twelve seasons at Kardinia Park, Wade became the highest-profile player to utilise the VFL's short-lived "10-year rule," crossing to North Melbourne in 1973. The move was driven by a desire to play under Ron Barassi, though many critics at the time suggested the veteran spearhead was past his prime.

Wade emphatically silenced those doubters at Arden Street, enjoying a late-career renaissance that was central to North Melbourne's rise as a powerhouse. He claimed his fourth league goalkicking title in 1974 and famously steered the Kangaroos to their maiden premiership in 1975. When he retired, Wade held the record for the most goals in VFL/AFL history, having surpassed Gordon Coventry's long-standing tally, and remains one of the few players in the history of the game to break the 1000-goal barrier.
