Bio
Recruited from the Murray Bushrangers with pick 56 in the 2014 National Draft, Dougal Howard began his career at Port Adelaide as a raw key position prospect. Initially utilised as a swingman capable of pinching in the ruck, his development was stalled by an ACL injury in 2016, but he returned to showcase elite closing speed and an immense spoiling reach. Despite being elevated to the leadership group and even captaining the Power for a game in 2019, Howard fell out of favour with the coaching staff regarding his best position. Unwilling to continue as a forward, he requested a trade to St Kilda following the 2019 season, seeking a permanent role in the backline.
At St Kilda, Howard immediately established himself as the club's first-choice fullback, becoming renowned for his ability to lead the league in one-percenters and spoils. He was quickly inducted into the Saints' leadership group, serving as vice-captain and acting as the defensive anchor during the club's push for finals contention. While his ball use occasionally drew scrutiny, his defensive discipline and capacity to nullify the competition's strongest key forwards made him a vital structural component of the Saints' defence throughout his tenure at Moorabbin.
