Bio
Drafted under the father-son rule as the son of former Essendon captain Ken Fletcher, Dustin Fletcher arrived at Windy Hill with expectations that he immediately exceeded. He made his debut in the famous 1993 "Baby Bombers" season, quickly cementing a spot in the backline as a gangly teenager. His debut year culminated in a premiership victory, where he played a key role in defence and showcased a composure well beyond his years. This early success set the foundation for a career that would span an incredible 23 seasons, making him a constant figure in the Essendon line-up across three different decades.
Fletcher redefined the full-back position with his unique physical attributes and defensive nous. Standing 198cm tall with a slender build, he was renowned for his closing speed and his ability to spoil contests with his extraordinarily long reach, often getting a fist to the ball in situations where opponents seemed destined to mark. While primarily a lock-down defender capable of nullifying the game's best power forwards, he was also an offensive weapon, famous for his prodigious torpedo punt that could clear the centre circle from a kick-in. His durability and ability to adapt to the evolving speed of the modern game allowed him to remain effective well into his late 30s.
