Bio
The son of an Italian coal miner from Wonthaggi, Edo Benetti was a prolific country forward whose journey to Punt Road was spearheaded by the personal recruitment efforts of club legend Jack Dyer. A teenage star in South Gippsland, Benetti arrived at Richmond with a reputation for accuracy and a powerful torpedo punt, quickly establishing himself as a dominant force at the reserves level where he topped the club's goalkicking in 1962. Despite his lower-grade heroics, the 183cm attacker struggled to translate that form into the senior side, often finding himself undersized and unmatched against the VFL's hardened key defenders. Unable to cement a spot in the starting 22, he transferred to the VFA to play for Port Melbourne and Yarraville before a slipped disc sustained while playing tennis forced his premature retirement. Benetti remained a dedicated figure in Victorian football long after his playing days, serving as a volunteer for the Vermont Football Club for over half a century.
