Bio
Recruited from East Geelong as a teenage prodigy, Eric Nicholls debuted in 1956 as the Cats' youngest player in nearly 40 years. A clever defender who captained the Victorian schoolboys, he endured a slow build to his senior career before finally cementing a spot on the half-back flank during a breakout 1961 season where he played every match. However, a broken collarbone the following year stalled his momentum, eventually squeezing him out of the club's formidable senior lineup during the celebrated 1963 premiership campaign. Although he missed out on the ultimate glory—departing Kardinia Park with a Reserves flag instead—Nicholls wasted no time carving out a successful second act in the VFA, where he became a premiership captain-coach and best and fairest winner with Geelong West.
