Recruited from Northern United in the Bendigo Football League, Eric Pascoe was a powerfully built ruckman who arrived at Princes Park with high expectations but faced the unenviable task of breaking into one of the era's most dominant lists. Standing 192cm, he was groomed as the long-term successor to club legends John Nicholls and Peter "Percy" Jones, a role that saw him spend much of his time as a frustrated understudy despite his obvious athleticism. Pascoe demonstrated his quality by winning the reserves Best and Fairest in 1973, but the recruitment of Mike Fitzpatrick following Nicholls' retirement kept him on the fringes of the senior side. Unable to secure a permanent spot in the Blues' ruck division, he eventually left the VFL to captain-coach Clarence in Tasmania before returning to the Bendigo league, where he further validated his ability by winning the prestigious Michelsen Medal with Golden Square.
