Teams

Born in the remote Victorian mountain town of Woods Point, Eric Shade emerged from the Williamstown CYMS ranks to make his VFL debut for Footscray as a sixteen-year-old in 1929. Standing just 170cm and weighing a slight 65kg, the diminutive rover and forward was thrown into the physical demands of senior football at a remarkably young age, yet managed to play 20 games over two seasons at the Western Oval. Despite showing he could find the goals, Shade departed the VFL after the 1930 season, crossing to Williamstown in the VFA where he played a further 37 games during the Association's aggressive recruiting era. His football career eventually gave way to national duty, with Shade serving in the Royal Australian Navy during the Second World War.
