Bio
Eric Woods stands as one of the few shining lights from University’s final, difficult years in the VFL. A medical student hailing from Albury, he established himself as the premier full-back of his era, combining elite contested marking with a monstrous drop kick that often turned defence into attack. Despite the Students failing to win a game in his final two seasons, Woods’ individual brilliance was undeniable, culminating in his selection as Victoria’s full-back for the 1914 National Carnival in Sydney. His football journey was abruptly ended by the outbreak of World War I, where he served with distinction as a medical officer and was awarded the Military Cross, eventually retiring from the game to pursue his medical career in the Riverina rather than returning to VFL football.
