Bio
Hailing from the Wimmera town of Minyip, Eric Zschech was a classy midfielder who arrived at Punt Road via the Postmaster-General's Department. After winning a local best and fairest under the tutelage of Roy Cazaly in the country, he moved to Melbourne for work and impressed in the postal service's mid-week competition before being snapped up by the Tigers. Making his debut in 1930, Zschech wasted little time cementing his spot in the senior side, becoming the linchpin of a formidable centreline trio alongside Alan Geddes and Brownlow Medallist Stan Judkins.
A stylish and balanced player renowned for his elite foot skills and cool head under pressure, Zschech was integral to the Tigers' "golden era" of the early 1930s. He played in four consecutive Grand Finals from 1931 to 1934, capturing premierships in 1932 and 1934, and earned selection for Victoria. Despite being in the prime of his career, he shocked the club by leaving the VFL at just 26 years of age to accept a lucrative captain-coaching role with Lefroy in Tasmania. He went on to become a legend of Tasmanian football, winning three league best and fairest awards in the TANFL.
