Bio
A man of many talents, Ern McIntyre was a dentist, professional singer, and first-class cricketer who also happened to be a formidable VFL ruckman. Standing 190cm, he used his size and clean hands to dominate marking contests and drift forward to kick goals, a skillset that earned him Victorian selection in 1945. His career at St Kilda was interrupted by Navy service during World War II, but he returned to become a key pillar in their lineup. However, his exit from the Saints remains one of the more unusual chapters in football history; in 1948, the club's hierarchy took issue with his "gentlemanly" conduct after he helped an opponent to his feet and applauded a rival's mark. Deemed too soft for the rough-and-tumble of the game, he was dropped to the bench and promptly quit in protest, crossing to Collingwood mid-season. He made an immediate impact at Victoria Park, playing in a Preliminary Final that same year, before injuries forced him into retirement after the 1949 season.
