Bio
A diminutive rover standing just 165cm, Ern Penny was a local talent recruited from the nearby Brighton Football Club in the VFA. He made an immediate impact upon arriving at St Kilda in 1934, playing 16 games in his debut season and proving himself to be a dangerous option around goal with a handy knack for finding space in forward pockets. Penny was a consistent contributor during a difficult era for the Saints, playing 29 games over two seasons and averaging a goal a game as a rotating small forward and midfielder. Despite establishing himself as a regular in the senior side, his VFL career was brief; he departed the Junction Oval after the 1935 season and returned to Brighton, where he continued to serve as a key playmaker and standout rover in the VFA for several years.
