Ernest "Curly" Jones was a devoted St Kilda figure who bridged the club's transition from the VFA into the newly formed VFL. Originally establishing himself as a rover in the VFA, where he played 69 games between 1892 and 1896, Jones remained a core part of the squad for the Saints' inaugural VFL season in 1897. While his on-field career in the new competition was brief, consisting of just 12 games over two seasons, his commitment to the club extended well beyond his playing days. Uniquely, Jones joined the St Kilda committee in 1897 while still an active footballer, marking the beginning of a significant administrative legacy that later saw him serve two terms as club President during the 1920s alongside a prominent role as a Melbourne City Councillor.
