Bio
Born into a prominent Bendigo family that featured a local mayor and his brother "Titch," a Fitzroy premiership star, Ernie Bailes arrived at Victoria Park with a significant reputation to uphold. Recruited from South Bendigo via the reserves, the diminutive rover and small forward was known for his daring style and an ability to kick long distances despite his small stature. He made his debut early in the 1909 season against St Kilda, but despite showing flashes of effective roving work, he could not secure a permanent place in a competitive Magpies lineup. After just two senior games, Bailes transferred to Brighton in the VFA mid-year, where he became a club stalwart alongside his brother and famously returned to play one final season after serving overseas in World War I.
