Recruited from Brighton in the VFA, Ernie Burnes arrived at the Brunswick Street Oval as a 24-year-old mature-age prospect during the 1932 season. A smaller utility standing 175cm, he was given a brief trial in the seniors late in the year, where he rotated through the forward line and managed to boot two goals in his four appearances. Although he showed he could compete at the level, Burnes was unable to command a regular place in a Maroons lineup that featured the legendary Haydn Bunton Sr, and his League career concluded after just one month of senior football.
