Bio
One of the VFL's early pioneers of Chinese heritage, Ernie Foo’s brief stint at the top level remains a fascinating footnote in St Kilda’s history. Born in Fitzroy to a Chinese father and an Australian mother, he was recruited via the Sydney YMCA and Wesley College pipeline, bringing a diverse background to a league that was overwhelmingly Anglo-Celtic at the time. He broke into the Saints' lineup during the 1914 season, managing four senior appearances and booting two goals as a forward option before falling out of the side. His footballing ambitions were effectively curtailed by the onset of World War I, where he enlisted under the anglicised alias "Ernest Arthur Ford" to serve in France. While his on-field career was short-lived, Foo is remembered today as a multicultural trailblazer who navigated the racial complexities of early 20th-century Australia to reach the game's highest level.
