Bio
A foundation player for St Kilda, Ernie Stewart transitioned with the club from the VFA where he had already served a three-year apprenticeship. He took the field alongside his brother Reg Stewart, but while Reg topped the club's goalkicking in the inaugural VFL season, Ernie went goalless across his 11 appearances. He was a regular fixture in a side that endured a brutal initiation to the new league, going winless throughout the entire 1897 campaign to claim the wooden spoon. Stewart's top-level career concluded after that single season, cementing his place as one of the original pioneers to represent the Saints in the competition's formative year.
