A defender whose football journey began in the VFA, Ernie Vollugi established himself at Punt Road with Richmond before making the step up to the VFL. His career was nearly derailed before it truly began when a severe illness forced him to miss the entire 1902 season, a period during which the club organised a benefit concert to support his recovery. After regaining his health, Vollugi was cleared to Melbourne in 1904, where he was immediately deployed as a half-back and back pocket in a Redlegs side riddled with injuries. Despite the resilience shown to return to elite sport, his VFL tenure was brief, restricted to just four senior appearances at the start of the season before he faded from the league scene.
