Stats
Bio
Recruited from Melbourne University, Es Downey was a key position prospect who arrived at the Demons during the manpower shortages of the Second World War. A product of Xavier College, he primarily operated as a centre half-back but showed he could impact the scoreboard, booting seven goals during his debut season. His 1944 campaign was impressive, seeing him play 16 games and win the club's Best First Year Player award. Despite this promising start, his time at VFL level was brief; he added just six games the following year before leaving the top tier to return to the amateur leagues, where he later coached Old Xaverians.
