Bio
Recruited from Swan Districts in the 2015 Rookie Draft, Ethan Hughes carved out a respectable decade-long career at Fremantle as a disciplined and versatile defender. A Bunbury product who was something of a late bloomer—having only taken up football seriously at age 15—Hughes overcame his late start to become a reliable fixture in the Dockers' backline. While he possessed the size to play on taller opponents and the athleticism to run off a wing, his game was defined less by flashiness and more by his unwavering commitment to the team structure and his courage in the air.
Hughes established a reputation as the ultimate clubman, a status cemented when he received the Players’ Trademark Award in 2020 for his selfless acts on and off the field. Although he often found himself fighting for his spot in the best 22, his persistence saw him notch over 100 games at the highest level. His tenure at Fremantle was bookended by WAFL premiership success with affiliate side Peel Thunder in both 2016 and 2024. After being delisted at the conclusion of the 2024 season, he signed with South Fremantle to continue his career in the WAFL.
