A highly decorated junior who captained Vic Metro, Ezra Poyas arrived at Richmond via pick 22 in the 1999 National Draft. A creative small forward and goal sneak, he struggled to translate his prolific underage form into regular senior football, managing just nine games over three seasons at Punt Road while battling shoulder issues. Despite finding the step up to AFL level difficult, his underlying talent was undeniable in the state league, where he tied for the 2001 J.J. Liston Trophy with the Tigers' affiliate Coburg. After being delisted by Richmond, he was thrown a lifeline by Melbourne in the 2003 Rookie Draft but failed to break into the Demons' senior lineup. Poyas eventually cemented his legacy as a VFL star, becoming a key figure in Sandringham's dynasty by playing in a hat-trick of premierships between 2004 and 2006.
