Born in Nagambie, Fen McDonald moved to the city to attend business college and was spotted by the Blues while playing for the Carlton District amateurs. A strongly built and pacey defender who had competed as a handicap runner, he made his debut in 1911 and established himself as a useful backman capable of pushing forward when required. After crossing to Melbourne for the 1913 season where he added a solitary game to his tally, his football career was tragically cut short by the outbreak of World War I. One of the first VFL players to enlist, McDonald served with the 7th Battalion and was killed in action during the Gallipoli landing on Anzac Day 1915, with his name now commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial.
