Bio
The son of prominent Irish Fenian and builder Hugh Francis Brophy, Frank Brophy was a locally raised talent who joined Fitzroy from St Ignatius Juniors. A capable forward who knew where the goals were, he quickly established himself in the Maroons' lineup, booting 20 majors across two seasons. His best football came in 1903, where he kicked 16 goals and earned a place in the side that fell just two points short of Collingwood in the Grand Final. However, his promising career was cut tragically short just months after that decider; in December 1903, Brophy suffered severe back and skull injuries after falling from a roof while working as a linesman, forcing his immediate retirement from the game at just 24 years of age.
