Bio
Born in Berwick and educated at Scotch College, Frank Brown was a prodigious all-round sportsman who broke into the Melbourne side while still a schoolboy. His VFL career was fleeting and sporadic, consisting of five games for the Redlegs and a single appearance for St Kilda, as his immense athletic potential was largely realized on the track rather than the football field. A national champion hurdler, Brown went on to represent Australia at the 1911 Inter-Empire Championships in London and claimed a major title in Berlin before serving in the First World War. The half-brother of noted dramatist Louis Esson, Brown led a colourful life as a journalist, soldier, and adventurer, leaving a legacy defined by his elite versatility and "picturesque" career path rather than a sustained tenure in league football.
