Bio
Recruited from Sandhurst in the Bendigo Football League, Frank Coghlan was a "quiet achiever" who carved out a respectable career at St Kilda after initially being turned away by Carlton. A mature-age recruit who debuted at 23, Coghlan made an immediate impact as a prolific ball-winning centreman, racking up 25 disposals in his first game and leading the club's disposal count in 1988. He was a key figure in the Saints' engine room during their gradual climb from the bottom of the ladder in the late 1980s, providing reliable delivery to the forwards with his workmanlike approach and high possession rate.
As his career progressed, Coghlan transitioned from a pure midfielder to a high-half-forward role, where he became renowned for playing at the feet of superstar full-forward Tony Lockett. His ability to read the play and gather crumbing opportunities saw him enjoy a career-best season in 1991, where he booted 33 goals and played in an elimination final. That same year, he notably polled three Brownlow votes for a 29-disposal, four-goal performance against Sydney, overshadowing Lockett despite "Plugger" kicking 11 goals in the same match. Coghlan returned to Sandhurst after his AFL days concluded, cementing his local legacy by winning the Michelsen Medal in 1995.
