Frank Cummins was a wartime recruit who emerged from the Navy to make a brief impression on the VFL during the league's tumultuous post-war transition. Originally from Elmore in regional Victoria, the 174cm utility was signed by South Melbourne in 1918, earning his senior debut in a Round 5 clash against Carlton. After managing just the solitary appearance for the Bloods, he crossed to Melbourne for the 1919 season, joining a club that was desperately rebuilding its list after coming out of recess. Cummins found himself part of a struggling Redlegs outfit that failed to register a win for the entire year, and he added only one more senior game to his tally before his top-level career concluded, leaving him as one of the many servicemen who filled the breach during a unique era of the game.
