Bio
Recruited from the Leopold Football Club, Frank Harley’s early career at Punt Road was heavily interrupted by the First World War. An engineer by trade, he enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy and managed just 16 senior appearances in his first five seasons while balancing his service commitments. It was only upon his full-time return to football in 1919 that he established himself as one of the Tigers' most valuable assets, evolving into a classy and determined utility capable of influencing the game from almost any position on the ground.
Harley became a lynchpin of the Richmond side that broke through for the club's maiden VFL premiership in 1920 and defended the title in 1921. While he often featured across the half-forward line or on the wing during these flag-winning campaigns, his versatility allowed him to drift into defence when required, relying on elite stamina and a polished skill set. His standing at the club was cemented with Life Membership in 1924 and selection for Victoria, before he departed the VFL to become a prolific full-forward in the VFA with Prahran and Alphington.
