Bio
Born into football royalty as the son of legendary coach Frank "Checker" Hughes, Frank Hughes jnr began his journey with Richmond Amateurs before breaking into the VFL ranks during the Second World War. His career path was inextricably linked to his father's famous coaching tenure; after making a handful of appearances for Richmond in 1944, he crossed to Melbourne the following season to play under his father, who had returned to coach the Demons. Standing taller than his famous parent at 180cm, Hughes was a defensive-minded player who failed to hit the scoreboard during his brief time at the top level. His stint in the VFL was short-lived, playing just eight games in the red and blue before departing the league to continue his career with Williamstown in the VFA.
