Bio
Frank Hurren was a South Yarra native who arrived at Essendon from Hawthorn in the Victorian Metropolitan Football League. A smaller-bodied utility standing at 174cm, he broke into the senior lineup late in the 1914 season, making his debut in the final round against Fitzroy. He managed just one more appearance and a solitary goal in 1915 before his football career was curtailed by the Great War. Hurren enlisted in the AIF and served with distinction in the 46th Battalion, eventually rising to the rank of Lieutenant and receiving the Belgian Croix de Guerre. While his time in the VFL was brief, he is remembered as one of the many young footballers whose sporting prime was sacrificed for military service.
