Bio
Recruited as a mature-age prospect from VFA club Brighton, Frank "Babe" Irwin arrived at Princes Park with a reputation as a potent goal-kicker. The Stawell native had booted 43 goals in 46 games in the Association, yet his transition to League football saw a complete reinvention of his playing role. Irwin was redeployed into the backline at Carlton, where he became a defensive stopper rather than a scorer, famously playing 45 senior games over three seasons without registering a single major. He provided experience and stability in defence during a transitional era for the Blues before eventually returning to Brighton in 1929 to conclude his career.
