Teams

Widely regarded as the greatest player in the history of the VFA, Frank Johnson arrived in the VFL as a highly decorated mature-age recruit after dominating for Port Melbourne. Famous for being the only footballer to earn All-Australian selection while playing in the second tier, he was a powerful and skilled key position utility who could command the ground from centre half-back or the ruck. Johnson finally tested himself at the elite level with Footscray in 1964, but arriving at age 27 and battling injury limited his output. He managed just five games for the Bulldogs and four with Fitzroy the following season before returning to the Borough, ensuring his legacy remained defined by his colossal standing in the Association rather than his brief cameo in the League.
