Bio
Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Frank Macky was a medical student who briefly featured for University during the 1911 VFL season. Recruited from New College in Box Hill, he managed seven senior appearances and booted two goals for the Students while residing at Ormond College. His football career was ultimately secondary to his medical studies, which he completed in 1914, but his life was deeply shaped by the onset of World War I. Macky's parents were both killed when the RMS Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1915, a tragedy that saw his mother famously give up her lifeboat seat to remain with her husband. Following this loss, Macky enlisted in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps, serving with distinction in the Middle East and Europe before returning to New Zealand to become a prominent figure in the Auckland medical community.
