Though standing only 174cm, he was a key component of the Blues' on-ball division, valued for his all-round game and consistency. His career highlight came during the 1921 season, where he played in the Grand Final side that narrowly fell to Richmond by four points. Martin remained a regular fixture in the starting 18 until his retirement in 1923, eventually earning Life Membership for his seven seasons of service to the club.
