Bio
Recruited from Sandringham Centrals, Frank "Bluey" Scanlan broke into the Melbourne side as a 16-year-old, making him one of the youngest debutants in the club's history. A serviceable half-forward who played alongside his older brother Bill, his early career was interrupted by service with the Royal Australian Navy during World War II, costing him the 1945 and 1946 seasons. He returned to play a role in Melbourne's 1948 campaign, featuring in the Semi Final against Essendon, but ultimately missed selection for the famous drawn Grand Final and subsequent premiership replay. Scanlan crossed to the Western Bulldogs (then Footscray) with his brother for a single season in 1949, eventually leaving the VFL to pursue a successful coaching tenure in country football with Port Fairy and Tocumwal.
