Frank Twomey was a giant of the Edwardian era, standing at an imposing 191cm (6ft 3in) at a time when such height was almost unheard of for a follower. Recruited from Carlton Districts, the towering ruckman made his debut for the Tigers late in the 1913 season but struggled to cement a permanent place in the side, managing just three senior appearances across two years. His League career was effectively curtailed by the outbreak of the Great War, during which he served overseas and was wounded in action, a sacrifice that halted his momentum at the elite level. Remarkable for his resilience, Twomey recovered sufficiently to return to football with Brunswick in the VFA after the armistice, leaving behind a brief legacy as one of the tallest players to ever don the yellow and black.
