Bio
Recruited from Port Melbourne, Fred Backway joined South Melbourne during the club's celebrated "Foreign Legion" era in the early 1930s. He faced the difficult task of breaking into a premiership-calibre lineup and managed only limited appearances before crossing to Melbourne in 1935 in search of greater opportunity. His time with the Demons proved similarly frustrating, as he spent three seasons on the fringe of senior selection without ever cementing a regular spot. Backway completed a tour of three clubs in six years by moving to Fitzroy for the 1938 season, but he added just one final game to his career tally. A determined follower and forward who provided depth during a competitive era, he remains a notable example of a journeyman who persisted at the top level despite struggling to secure a permanent place in the starting 18.
