Stats
Bio
A Box Hill native whose football ambitions were delayed by service in the RAAF during World War II, Fred Barnes arrived at South Melbourne in 1946 as a mature-age recruit. Standing 187cm and weighing 87kg, he possessed the physical dimensions of a key position player or ruckman, eventually making his debut for the Bloods at age 25. After managing just three senior appearances and two goals at the Lakeside Oval, Barnes crossed to Hawthorn for the 1947 season in search of greater regular opportunities. He added another six games to his tally in the brown and gold, operating as a tall utility in a struggling side, before his brief VFL career concluded at the end of that year.
