Bio
Born in Hobart and recruited from local side Caulfield, Fred Brown was a robust follower who served Hawthorn during its pivotal transition from the VFA to the VFL. A World War I veteran who saw action in France before establishing his football career, Brown became a fixture in the club's VFA lineup between 1922 and 1924, using his imposing 185cm frame to shoulder the ruck duties. He earned his place in history as a member of the Mayblooms' inaugural VFL squad in 1925, making his debut in Round 4 against Carlton at Princes Park. While his time at the elite level was restricted to just four senior appearances across two seasons, Brown remains a significant figure as one of the pioneer players who helped steer the club through its difficult formative years in the major league.
