Bio
Recruited from North Melbourne Juniors after developing his game in the western suburbs, Fred Carpenter was a dangerous rover and forward pocket with a sharp eye for the goals. He debuted for South Melbourne in 1910 and spent four seasons as a consistent scoring threat, averaging well over a goal a game before crossing to the VFA. Carpenter returned to the Lake Oval in 1919 to bolster the side during the post-war restart, adding experience to the squad for a further two seasons. While his VFL tenure was interrupted, he established a significant legacy in the Association, where he became a premiership captain at Williamstown and continued playing senior football until the age of 39.
