Recruited from the local Fitzroy Juniors, Fred Chapman was a fringe forward who struggled to break into a formidable Maroons lineup during the early 1920s. He made his debut in Round 4, 1920 against Melbourne, managing to slot a goal in his first outing, but found opportunities limited in a squad destined for the finals. After adding just one more senior appearance early in the 1921 season against Carlton, Chapman drifted out of the VFL system as Fitzroy consolidated the list that would go on to win the premiership the following year.
