Bio
A local product from Yarraville, Fred Cook initially broke into the Footscray lineup as a raw defender and utility player who struggled to find his niche at the elite level. After three seasons and limited opportunities in the VFL, he transferred to the VFA, a move that ultimately launched one of the most colourful careers in Victorian football history. Cook transformed himself from a backman into a goal-kicking machine at Port Melbourne, using his immense strength and contested marking ability to dominate the goal square. Known affectionately as "Fabulous Fred," he became a cult hero and a legitimate media star in the 1970s, booting over 1,200 goals for the Borough to cement his standing as an all-time VFA legend.
