Bio
Recruited from Rosebud on the Mornington Peninsula, Gallagher was a versatile attacker who initially carved out a niche as a utility player, winning the club's Best Utility award in 1956 before shifting permanently to full-forward. His career is best remembered for a standout 1957 season where he topped the Bombers' goalkicking and produced a devastating display against Geelong at Windy Hill, booting 12 goals to join club legend John Coleman as one of the few Dons to achieve the feat. He carried that form into the finals, standing tall as Essendon's only multiple goalkicker in their heavy Grand Final defeat to Melbourne. After finding opportunities limited the following year, he left the VFL to pursue a captain-coaching role with Turvey Park in the Riverina.
