Bio
Fred Gilby was a tenacious half-back flanker recruited from Coburg in the VFA, where he had featured in the club's inaugural season in 1925. Arriving at Carlton in 1926, he quickly established himself as a dashing and reliable fixture in the Blues' defence. He remained a loyal one-club player at VFL level, dedicating his entire 12-season career to Carlton and serving as a consistent presence in the backline throughout the late 1920s and 1930s.
A regular selection for over a decade, Gilby played 179 games and appeared in 12 finals, including the 1932 Grand Final loss to Richmond. His durability and longevity were significant; he held the Carlton record for most games played in the number 6 guernsey for 76 years, a long-standing mark that was eventually surpassed by club legend Kade Simpson in 2013. Gilby was recognised for his service with Life Membership of the Carlton Football Club in 1933.
